Overview
The GM Multicultural Community Garden is an initiative by the Canberra Muslim Community (CMC) Inc., aiming to establish a sustainable outdoor garden within the Gungahlin Mosque complex. This project seeks to foster a meaningful environment that promotes positive health and wellbeing outcomes for participants and the broader community.
Background
As a subcommittee of the CMC, the GM Multicultural Community Garden was conceived to address sustainability issues and enhance community engagement. By leveraging the diverse skills, knowledge, and experiences of our multicultural community, we aim to create a space that not only benefits the environment but also strengthens social connections.
Objectives
- Environmental Stewardship: Achieve tangible environmental outcomes such as reduced waste, energy, water, and carbon emissions, while improving microclimates and biodiversity.
- Community Wellbeing: Enhance physical and mental health, increase social capital, and build resilience through community connections.
- Sustainability Awareness: Raise community awareness and encourage behaviour change in response to climate emergencies and sustainability issues.
- Collaborative Engagement: Offer a holistic programme by working collaboratively and leveraging community expertise.
- Cultural Showcase: Grow edible plants unique to our multicultural community, showcasing diverse cuisines and traditions.
Tulip 🌷 Project
"If the Final Hour comes while you have a palm-cutting in your hands and it is possible to plant it before the Hour comes, you should plant it."
— Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)
We are thrilled to announce that the Gungahlin Mosque has become a proud partner of the Floriade Community 2024. As the first Muslim organisation to join this esteemed community event, our application was approved by the Floriade Community, an ACT Government initiative. We have received tulip bulbs and annuals valued at over AUD 7,000, which will be a vibrant addition to our garden.

Benefits of Community Gardens
Community gardens make our city better. They are places where people can meet, be active, and engage in creative activities that keep both mind and body healthy. Gardens also support the environment by providing habitats for plants and animals and helping to cool the planet.
"There is none amongst the Muslims who plants a tree or sows seeds, and then a bird, or a person, or an animal eats from it, but is regarded as a charitable gift for him."
— Sahih Bukhari, Volume 3, Book 39, Number 513
