Sunnah acts (etiquette) of Eid al-Fitr
Eid al-Fitr (عيد الفطر), marking the end of Ramadan, is a time of celebration and spiritual reflection characterized by specific customs and etiquettes. Some of the notable acts are:
- Waking up early in the morning, earlier than usual.
[Bayhaqi, Hadith No. 6126] - Using the miswak (tooth-stick).
[Tabyeenul Haqaiq 1/538] - Taking a full bath (ghusl).
[Ibn Majah, Hadith No. 1315] - Dressing neatly according to the Sunnah.
[Bukhari, Hadith No. 948] - Wearing your best available clothes.
[Bukhari 948, Mustadrak Hakim 7560] - Applying fragrance (for men).
[Mustadrak Hakim 7560] - For Eid al-Fitr, eating something sweet (like dates) before going to the Eid prayer.
[Bukhari 953, Tirmidhi 542, Sunan Darimi 1603] - Going to the Eid prayer ground (Eidgah) early.
[Abu Dawood, Hadith No. 1157] - Giving Sadaqatul Fitr (Zakat al-Fitr) before the Eid prayer (Eid al-Fitr only).
[Daraqutni, Hadith No. 1694] - Performing the Eid prayer at the Eidgah
[Bukhari 956, Abu Dawood 1158] - Returning via a different route than the one used to go to the Masjid.
[Bukhari, Hadith No. 986] - Walking to the Masjid, if physically able.
[Abu Dawood, Hadith No. 1143] Reciting the Takbeer slowly on the way to Eid al-Fitr prayer:
During Eid al-Fitr, the takbir is an important part of the celebration, recited to express the greatness of Allah. The takbir for Eid begins from the night of Eid (the night before the Eid prayer) and continues until the time of the Eid prayer. Here is the form of the takbir that is commonly recited:
الله أكبر الله أكبر الله أكبر
لا إله إلا الله
الله أكبر الله أكبر
و لله الحمد
Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar,
La ilaha illa Allah,
Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar,
wa lillahi al-hamd.
This takbir is recited loudly by the congregation on the way to the prayer and until the start of the Eid prayer itself, creating a vibrant atmosphere of devotion and celebration.
These are the most common sunnah acts (etiquettes) for Eid al-Fitr and Allah knows best. May Allah accept all of our good deeds.
