Should a BF/GF pay rent in your house? Is it permissible for a Muslim to rent property from a non-Muslim (because they hang crosses, display statues)?

Question:
Should a BF/GF pay rent in your house? Is it permissible for a Muslim to rent property from a non-Muslim (because they hang crosses, display statues)?
Answer:
Asalamu'alaikum Sister, and thank you for your question.

It is permissible in Islam to make a rental contract with both Muslims and non-Muslims.

For non-Muslims, if after renting the house they drinks wine in it, or worships the cross, or commit zina, then there is no sin on the Muslim for any of that, because they did not rent out the house for that purpose. The sin is the action of the renter and there is no sin on the landlord.

Similarly it is also permissible for a Muslim to form a rental contract with a non-Muslim landlord. The statues and crosses are not usually displayed in the house being rented as they do not have the right to dictate what you display in the house after renting it.

In summary: it is permissible to rent a house to a non-Muslim for them to live or to rent from them, but dealing with a Muslim is always preferable.

And Allah knows best.
